Emotional and behavioral concerns do not always fit neatly into a single category. A child or teen may be struggling with anxiety, mood, behavior, relationships, or emotional regulation, while an adult may have experienced longstanding difficulties without fully understanding what is contributing to them. Sometimes symptoms overlap, change over time, or seem to point in several different directions.
A psychological evaluation brings together information about an individual’s history, current concerns, symptoms, strengths, and functioning to develop a more complete understanding of what may be going on. At Calhoun Psychology, evaluations are individualized to the questions that bring you to us—helping clarify diagnoses, understand how different concerns may interact, and determine meaningful next steps.
“Good assessment goes beyond identifying symptoms. It asks why they’re happening, how they fit together, and what this all means for the path forward.”
We take time to understand each person’s history, strengths, experiences, and current challenges so that diagnoses and recommendations reflect the whole person—not just a set of symptoms.
A psychological evaluation may be appropriate when concerns involve one or several areas of emotional, behavioral, or interpersonal functioning. Because symptoms often overlap and influence one another, the evaluation considers the full range of primary concerns rather than focusing narrowly on a single suspected diagnosis.
You may benefit from a psychological evaluation if you are experiencing any of the following:
A psychological evaluation should do more than determine whether someone meets criteria for a diagnosis. It should help make sense of the concerns that brought you to the evaluation, clarify how different symptoms and experiences fit together, and provide a clearer direction for moving forward.
A thoughtful psychological evaluation should help answer questions such as:
Every evaluation is guided by the individual’s unique referral questions and concerns. Rather than applying the same evaluation process to everyone, we thoughtfully tailor each assessment to gather the information needed to answer the questions that matter most—providing meaningful insights that support informed decisions about treatment, support, and next steps.
No two individuals experience emotional, behavioral, or psychological concerns in exactly the same way. That’s why we believe every psychological evaluation should be guided by the individual’s unique referral questions, history, strengths, and areas of concern rather than a one-size-fits-all assessment process.
Our evaluations integrate information from multiple sources—including clinical interviews, developmental and psychosocial history, behavioral observations, standardized measures, relevant school or medical records, and input from parents, teachers, partners, or other professionals when appropriate. Each source contributes an important piece of the overall picture.
Rather than interpreting symptoms or individual sources of information in isolation, we thoughtfully integrate findings to understand the meaningful patterns that emerge. We consider how concerns overlap and influence one another, evaluate possible explanations for the difficulties an individual is experiencing, and determine which diagnoses, if any, are best supported. This integrated approach provides a more complete understanding of the individual and forms the foundation for individualized conclusions and recommendations.
Our goal is for every individual and family to leave the evaluation with more than a diagnosis or a collection of assessment results. We strive to provide meaningful answers, practical recommendations, and a clear path forward.
You’ll receive a detailed report summarizing the information gathered, evaluation findings, diagnostic conclusions (when applicable), and individualized recommendations. Our reports are designed to provide a clear and integrated understanding of the concerns evaluated and can be shared with healthcare providers, therapists, schools, or other professionals when appropriate.
Following the evaluation, we’ll meet with you to review the findings, explain how we reached our conclusions, answer your questions, and discuss recommendations in clear, understandable language. We believe feedback should be collaborative, educational, and tailored to your unique concerns—not simply a review of diagnoses.
Recommendations are tailored to the individual’s unique strengths, challenges, needs, and goals. Depending on the evaluation findings, recommendations may include:
Perhaps most importantly, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of what may be contributing to the concerns that prompted the evaluation, how different factors may interact, and which supports are most likely to help. Our goal is to provide the clarity needed to make informed decisions about treatment and support and move forward with confidence.
Your evaluation begins with a comprehensive clinical interview and review of relevant history to understand the concerns that brought you to us. Your clinician will then select standardized measures and other assessment methods based on the questions being addressed. Information from parents, teachers, partners, or other individuals may also be gathered when appropriate. After integrating all of the information collected, your clinician will prepare a comprehensive written report and meet with you for a personalized feedback session to review the findings, diagnostic conclusions, and recommendations.
The amount of time varies depending on the complexity of the concerns and the assessment methods needed to answer the referral questions. Some evaluations require more extensive interviewing, testing, or information gathering than others. Before beginning, we will discuss the anticipated process, time commitment, and cost so you know what to expect.
Yes. We provide psychological evaluations for children, teens, college students, and adults. The evaluation is tailored to the individual’s age, history, current concerns, and referral questions.
Sometimes. Whether a psychological evaluation provides sufficient documentation depends on the diagnosis, requested accommodations, and requirements of the school, college, testing organization, or employer. When academic accommodations require cognitive and achievement testing, a psychoeducational evaluation may be more appropriate. We recommend reviewing the documentation requirements before beginning the evaluation so we can help determine what assessment is needed.
Calhoun Psychology is a self-pay practice for psychological assessment services. Our self-pay model allows evaluations to be individualized based on clinical needs rather than insurance requirements or predetermined testing limitations. This flexibility allows us to recommend the assessment approach that best addresses each individual’s unique referral questions rather than tailoring the evaluation to insurance coverage criteria.
If your evaluation is completed by one of our Licensed Psychologists, we can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Because reimbursement policies vary widely by insurance plan, we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to determine your specific out-of-network benefits.
To help make psychological evaluations more accessible, we also offer reduced-fee evaluations completed by doctoral-level psychology interns and postdoctoral clinicians who are closely supervised by our Licensed Psychologists. All evaluation findings are reviewed with a Licensed Psychologist; however, services provided by interns or postdoctoral clinicians are generally not eligible for out-of-network insurance reimbursement.
You don’t need to know which diagnosis best explains your concerns before reaching out. Our psychological evaluations are designed to examine the full range of primary concerns, consider how symptoms may overlap or influence one another, and provide meaningful answers and what to do next.
