Dr. Ty Ridenour is a North Carolina Provisional Psychologist with more than 25 years of experience in psychological assessment, therapy, and prevention. At Calhoun Psychology, Dr. Ridenour provides psychological and educational testing through our Durham office and school partnerships, as well as individual therapy for children and adolescents at our Durham office. His clinical work includes supporting young people with ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma and stress-related concerns, learning differences, grief, and other emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges.
Dr. Ridenour approaches assessment and therapy with an emphasis on understanding each young person as an individual rather than simply identifying symptoms or diagnoses. In his assessment work, he considers a child’s or adolescent’s history, strengths, areas of difficulty, and functioning across settings to develop meaningful conclusions and practical recommendations. In therapy, he works collaboratively with young people and their families to understand the factors contributing to current difficulties, build upon existing strengths, develop effective coping and problem-solving skills, and support healthier functioning over time.
Dr. Ridenour earned his doctorate in School Psychology from Ball State University in 1996, with a concentration in neuropsychology. He later completed postdoctoral training and earned a second master’s degree in Psychiatric Epidemiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. His clinical experience spans school settings, inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care, private practice, and work with youth involved with the justice system. Throughout his career, Dr. Ridenour has held clinical, research, and faculty roles associated with Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research has focused on the development and evaluation of evidence-based prevention programs, understanding individual differences in treatment response, and improving assessment of factors that contribute to risk and resilience during childhood and adolescence. This background informs his thoughtful, evidence-based approach to understanding each client’s needs and identifying supports that can make a meaningful difference in everyday life.
